cyprus troodos
Mountain of Troodos the highest point
If we glance at Ancient Greece we shall see the adoration and eulogy of nature and mountain, springing from the recesses of her history. It could not be otherwise because the ancient Gods had their seat up on the highest mountains, on the Olympus Thessaly and on the Olympus of Cyprus.
The Cyprus Olympus, the peak of the most important mountain range of Cyprus, is a pine-clad area full of unimaginable and area my beauty, and has been known as Cyprus Troodos since the Lusignan period. During winter it is covered with snow, while m the summer it changes into a cool paradise full of greenery and gurgling crystal-like waters. Its slopes are covered with forest and dominate views of mountains, plains, gulfs, and the sea-shores, all harmonized in an admirable unity.
Orpheus in the "Hymn to Aphrodite" sang the foam-born Goddess who reigned on that majestic peak, on the slopes of which, according to Euripides, the Muses also lived together with the Graces and Bacchaes.
At the beginning of the British occupation of the Island, the responsible authorities turned their attention to Cyprus Troodos and established it as an official resort owing to its advantageous situation. Lieut. Colonel Craig, Royal Medical Corps, was enthusiastic with the choice and in relevant report said: "If you are an artist you will find innumerable subjects for your brush and pen." Lord Kitchener, then a Royal Engineer Captain, set up the flagstaff on the highest peak of Cyprus Troodos.
In due course the form of Cyprus Troodos changed. In summer the tents on it are still pitched among pines, by the side of modern hotels. The tourists spend the summer theire painting a picture of lively activity full of the joy of recreation and the holiday spirit.
But Cyprus Troodos had been for a while the background to the adventurous life of the famous French poet Arthur Rimbaud.
He landed at Larnaca on the 15th December 1878 to work for a French Company exploiting stone quarries. He was only a foreman and his workmen considered him a clever "enchanteur", capable of conjuring the evil eye. But getting seriously ill, he went home and in May 1880 returned again to Cyprus. This time he went to Cyprus Troodos to build what he called "Le palais du Gouverneur".
Noteworthy are the remarks of the writer Claude Le gagneux, who says that the stay of the poet in Cyprus was "his first important contact with Middle East countries, which may consequently have influenced his "etatd' esprit" and given the definite "coup de pounce" to his sudden longing for the East".
