Private Schools and colleges
Private schools and colleges in North Cyprus charge a fee per academic year.They are monitored by The Ministry of Education and must follow guidelines for curriculum, assessment, discipline and standards for teacher recruitment and teaching.
Many schools follow the British Key Stages, GCSE syllabus, Cambridge Young Learners Scheme, and SATs. The importance of Information Technology as a key subject is recognised and taught to a high standard. Students are also expected to learn the Turkish language. School uniform is worn by every student in North Cyprus. The day usually starts at 8.30 a.m. until 4.00 - 4.30 p.m. Schools and colleges normally break up for summer in mid June until September.
Sunny Lane School, Alsancak
This private school offers curriculum for primary and secondary pupils. Children can be taught in English and Turkish.
The English National Curriculum is studied with Turkish subjects as a secondary education. There are up to 150 places available. The present highest pupil/teacher ratio is 1:15 but this can be as low as 1:1 in class tutorials.
Government run schools and colleges in Northern Cyprus
Government run schools are taught mainly in the Turkish language with English as a second language.Children take an entrance exam at eleven years old to attend one of the four secondary schools where English is taught as the first language.However expatriate children can gain entry without examination providing that they have been living on the island for less than two years.Reports are issued twice a year and examinations for assessment are taken mid and end of term. There are two terms per year. Children can leave school at 14 years although the majority continue until 17 years in North Cyprus.
