The Citadel is a square fourteenth-century building with four circular towers at the corners. It was remodelled by Nicolo Fos-carini in 1492. His name appears alongside the winged lion of Venice above the main entrance. Famagusta may well remain identified with the 'seaport of Cyprus described by Shakespeare in Othello. But the Lieutenant Go vernor of Cyprus from 1506 to 1508, one Christoforo Moro, had nothing of the Moor about him, except possibly his name, which may have given rise to a misapprehension on the part of Shakespeare unless he was taking literary licence. In any event, the literary licence or the misapprehension is likely to be perpetuated. People enjoy identifying the Citadel with Othello's tower
