The altar in the ruins of the south chapel was an interesting survival of a church described by Nicolai Martoni, a fourteenth century notary and traveller, as 'a house of St Francis, passing fair, with a fair cloister, a dormitory, many cells and other rooms, with a fine garden, and a quantity of conduits, wells and cisterns'. He adds that the guardian informed him that the friars lived badly and received indifferent alms.
