Greek Orthodox Cathedral
The original Byzantine cathedral dedicated to St Epiphanios was retained in its entirety when, in emulation of the new Latin cathedral, a vast Gothic structure was added to its north side. The simple, original building of two aisles, each terminating in a semicircular apse, probably owed its survival to having been the burial place of St Epiphanios, though the saint's remains had long since been removed to Constantinople. Both the Byzantine and the Gothic structures suffered tremendous damage in the Turkish bombardment. But it has been suggested that some of the damage done to the larger building was due to the weakness of the outer walls, because they were provided with a great many spaces for the tombs of founders, and these may well have affected the stability of the fabric. It is worth mentioning that the object of this late fourteenth-century building practice was to produce endowments, and therefore it is ironic if it should have, literally, contributed to this church's downfall.
