Other Churches and Mosques
Other Churches and Mosques in North Cyprus Famagusta
Other churches may be visited, but rather in the way of pilgrimage to ruins than for their architectural value. There is the Carmelite Church, notable for the coats of arms painted on its walls; the Tanner's Mosque, believed to have originated as a Christian church of the sixteenth century, and with walls containing acoustic vases; St .Anna's Church, for mural paintings with Latin inscriptions; the twin Templars' and Hospitaller's Churches, of which the larger and earlier is that of the Knights Templar, the Church of the Hospitallers being distinguished by sockets at the eaves for banner staves; the Church of the Holy Cross (Stavros), which has been used as a mosque and as a warehouse; Ayia Zoni, or the Holy Girdle, dating from the fifteenth century; and the Church of St Nicholas, a ruined Byzantine building originally surmounted by two domes. It is said that the sites of a hundred churches can still be pointed out in Famagusta.
