Palazzo del Proveditore
Palazzo del Proveditore in Cyprus Famagusta
The Venetians made use of granite pillars brought from Salamis to support the three arches in the facade of their provincial governor's palace, The coat of arms which appears over the central arch is that of Giovanni Renier, Captain of Cyprus in 1552. The main interest lies in the front of the palace, and in quarters used as a prison during the Turkish occupation of the city.
Two granite pillars in the square, to the west of the Cathedral, and also from Salamis, were originally furnished with the winged lion of St Mark and the statue of St Theodore, who is much venerated in Venice for his martyrdom by being thrown to alligators. The modern bust at present in the square is that of Namik Kemal Bey, the Turkish poet (1840-88), who was exiled from his homeland for defiance of the sultan, and who was imprisoned in Famagusta near this site.
