St Barnabas Church and Mausoleum
St. Barnabas Church and Mausoleum
The original monastery of A.D. 477 was destroyed by the Saracens. The present church was built by Archbishop Philotheos in 1756. As with many another church in Cyprus, it incorporates in its structure the mutilated remains of earlier buildings - in this case a spirally fluted column of dark-green marble embedded in the wall on the south side of the present bema. Some authorities have expressed a tentative hope that this is a survival from the shrine built for the sacred relics by Anthemios on his return from Constantinople c. 478. The icon of the patron saint painted in 1762 depicts him as the founder, or at least the originator, of the Autocephalous Church. A small chapel at the east end has been used for the Latin rite. The bell tower was added in 1958, and -was paid for out of the proceeds of the work of the three brothers, Chariton, Barnabas and Stephanos, the youngest of whom was born in 1894. The modern Mausoleum which has been constructed over the empty tomb of St Barnabas is about a hundred yards to the east of the church. The tombs are similar to pagan tombs of the Salamis necropolis - which accords with the legend of the saint's death and burial. The mausoleum covers the marble arch which until recently was the sole protection for the tombs. A very old icon shows signs of having been kissed by the devout over a long period of years. There is also a holy well to which is attributed the power of curing skin diseases, and which is reached by a flight of fourteen steps.
