Underground Chambers in Famagusta
Underground Chambers in Famagusta in North Cyprus Famagusta
An underground cavern discovered in 1966 is reached from the road running parallel to the wall connecting the Martinengo and Mozzo bastions. This consists of two huge chambers, roughly at right angles to each other and carved out of the natural rock, leaving pillars of stone as supports. It is estimated that the area could have accommodated 2,000 persons. Ventilation shafts provide a constant temperature and dry atmosphere. There are signs of domestic fires, recesses for storage and mangers for horses, as well as seating for some of the occupants. The present sandy floor gives a false level, and a depression near the angle between the two chambers indicates that cisterns for water storage may exist below. Though coins of the Venetian period were discovered during the preliminary clearance of the caves, and suggest that this was a place of refuge during the siege of the city, the original date may well go back to the period B.C. The key is kept at the Antiquities Office at the entrance to Othello's Tower, and an escort will be provided.
