Yialousa is a large village, almost a small town, which suffers from depopulation, but where there is a simple hotel. There is a remoteness about the Karpas peninsula which is particularly charming when taken in conjunction with the friendliness of the local people, who are often avid for news of the world and of their many relatives who have emigrated to England. Shortage of water makes this district unsuitable for touristic development. However, emphasis on the growing of tobacco and pistachio nuts has greatly improved the economy of what was hitherto an impoverished part of the Cyprus island.
The excavations of Yialousa's Byzantine Basilica under the direction of Professor Papagheorghio of the Cyprus Museum will be of interest to archaeologically minded wayfarers. After running close to the north coast and passing several inviting bays and small promontories, the road swings inland through a small pass in the hills to Rizokarpaso.
