The life of modern Kyrenia centres around the Kyrenia Harbour North Cyprus and the sea, whereas in earlier days it was indivisible from its great castle. It would be difficult to find another place in the Mediterranean which is so close to the English ideal.
The mountains backing the town have fantastic shapes, reminiscent of fairy tale illustrations; the slopes are well watered and fertile, producing a profusion of fruit and wild flowers. The high buildings around the horseshoe harbour are little changed from their original functional design as warehouses into which carob beans and other local produce could be tipped at street level and removed three or four floors below on the quayside. And the campanile of the church and minaret add to the pattern. The great Venetian walls of the castle, mellow and golden, squat protectively to the east, while across the open sea, on clear days, the harsh outlines of the mountainous Asian coast break the horizon. In recent years the unsatisfactory north entrance to the harbour has been closed. Extensive construction work and dredging have restored the original all weather entrance to the harbour east of the castle, the ultimate aim being to provide Cyprus with a valuable port on the north of the Cyprus island.
North Cyprus Kyrenia is no longer a backwater retreat for retired, excessively clubbable Empire builders. It is gay and full of life. Sailing, fishing, water ski-ing and a warm sea attract visitors, and combine with the very special night life of the little town. The hotels are popular at week-ends with members of the armed forces and their families stationed elsewhere on the Cyprus island. Kyrenia has an atmosphere as highly coloured as its picture postcards.
