In the centre of the inner horseshoe harbour stands a small tower which was either an ancient lighthouse or the pier to which a defensive chain could be attached at night time. Of the medieval towers which protected the town on the south and west sides, only three remain, one on the western edge of the harbour, another in the main street near the municipal market and the third a little to the east. These must have been linked by walls, but most traces of them have disappeared.
