BRS Members Lunch at Pia Bella Hotel North Cyprus
Influential lobby group meets in the presence of three officials from the Nicosia based British High Commission.
Over one hundred and seventy members of the British Residents Society came together for a splendid lunch on Saturday 27 January at Kyrenia's North Cyprus Pia Bella Hotel. The meeting was arranged for existing
members of the 800 plus strong organisation to meet some of the 185 new members who had joined the influential lobby group during
2006.
In the presence of three officials from the Nicosia based British High Commission, Claire Lawley, Roger Woods and David Reed, BRS Chairman Mike Maternaghan explained that the BRS was going from strength to strength and was perhaps going to break the 1,000 member mark during
2007. representing the largest organisation of its type on the island.
The BRS provides a number of services for its members, including advice on varying facets of settling in to North Cyprus society, social functions and news of Government initiatives, as well as assisting the TRNC Government in taking steps for the smooth integration of a considerable
number of expatriates in the community. The society also raises vast amounts of money for charitable causes for the benefit of all the residents of North Cyprus.
Also present at last Saturday's luncheon were representatives of local North Cyprus banks who were offering special concessions on a number of financial products exclusively for BRS members.
Aims of the BRS
BRS events coordinator Julia Price explained that one of the aims of the Society was to provide it's members with helpful and useful advice on a wide range of facets to do with living in North
Cyprus, "And if we can facilitate the provision of specialist services such as banking, insurance and other financial services, whilst at the same time, saving money for our members, then that is all to the good."
Another example of BRS member's benefits is the new arrangement the Society has negotiated with the Nicosia based Life Hospital. Through the good offices of Scott Kennedy's FMA (Financial Management Advisors) BRS members can now enjoy substantial discounts off their medical bills. Upon entering a contract with this modern and superbly equipped hospital, which has a casualty and a 24 hour Ambulance emergency service, BRS members can have up to a hefty 50% knocked off their final invoice for any number of medical services, including: examinations, outpatient treatments, major surgeiy, orthopaedics, midwifery and all manner of specialist medical services.
"Many BRS members expressed considerable interest in this new member's medical package," explained Kennedy in an exclusive interview with the Cyprus Observer. "Some have enquired about the Life Hospital's scale of charges, are they competitive they asked? The answer is, Yes! Life Hospital's fees and charges are in line with or lower than any of the other private hospitals in North Cyprus. Others have asked if they can have a tour of the hospital prior to signing up for the coverage and I am pleased to report that this can be arranged, on request," he added.
One BRS member, who signed up for the BRS Medical Cover contract at last Saturday's lunch, was soon to be pleased with her act of decisiveness. That same evening, Linda Aldridge and her husband were looking forward to celebrating Burns Night at an Alsancak restaurant. On entering the building she tripped on an
unseen 'low step', fell and injured her foot. She was taken to the Life Hospital for an X-ray which revealed that she had incurred a nasty break in her foot. She was immediately given the appropriate orthopaedic treatment, plastered, equipped with crutches, issued with pain killers and transported back to the restaurant in time to toast the haggis! "Excellent medical service," she said, "And what's more, when I presented my BRS Medical Cover Contract, which I had only signed earlier the same day, they knocked 50% off the bill. Marvellous!"
Diners at last Saturday's lunch were also invited to view a display of local handicrafts. Of particular interest was a display of wood carving by Robert Byers, Trade Team leader from the Nicosia based Kobi Centre.
At the Pia Bella Member's Luncheon it was announced that the BRS Annual General Meeting would take place, again at the Pia Bella, on Saturday March 10, 2007 to be followed by lunch.
You can meet a member of the British Residents Society to discuss membership details and a whole raft of member benefits at The Hut, located behind Kyrenia's North Cyprus central Post Office on any Saturday morning, or at the Pegasos Restaurant Friday Market in Karaoglanoglu, North Cyprus.
