New TRNC govt strengthens hand in confidence vote
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus' (TRNC) new coalition government yesterday cleared the last hurdle to move ahead by winning a confidence vote in Parliament.
The Republican Turkish Party (CTP)-Freedom and Reform Party (ORP) coalition government, which was formed under the chairmanship of CTP leader Ferdi Sabit Soyer, won the vote, 28-2.
During the vote, Peace and Democracy Movement (BDH) leader Mustafa Akinci and Independent Deputy Erden Ozaskin voted against the new government. Thirteen deputies from the main opposition National Unity Party (UBP) and six from the Democrat Party (DP) abstained as they protest the formation of a new government, claiming that certain people in Turkey triggered the resignations from the former TRNC government that led to its collapse, to open the way for a new one that will follow policies in close coordination with Ankara.
In the 50-seat Turkish Cypriot Parliament, the CTP has 25 seats and the ORP four.
In a speech after the confidence vote, Premier Soyer expressed the new government's commitment to taking important, constructive steps towards improving the living standards of Turkish Cypriots, finding a just solution to the Cyprus dispute based on political equality and bi-zonality, and contributing to Turkey's bid to join the European Union.
CTP officials late September approved the formation of a new government with the ORP, paving the way for the formation of a new coalition government after a deadlock in the TRNC.
Soyer resigned from being premier in early September after the CTP decided to part ways with its coalition partner the center-right DP because of disputes largely over the settlement of the Cyprus issue. Prior to the former TRNC government's resignation, three deputies from the opposition UBP and one from the DP resigned and established a new political party, the ORP, which is now a coalition partner.
Former Foreign Minister and DP leader Serdar Denktas, in an analysis of the recent developments, said, "The CTP's decision will be seen as a black mark in the TRNC's political history, as a path that has never been trod before has been taken." Denktas accused Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party of being behind the resignations of some of the Turkish Cypriot deputies.
