Northern Cyprus population just over 265,000
Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer announced yesterday that according to the Census taken on 30 April 2006 the de-facto population of Northern Cyprus was 265,100 and de-jure population was 256,644. He stated that the results of the census would be announced to the public as they go through the steps, adding that in about 10-12 days the numbers regarding place of birth and ages would be announced. Soyer stated that when compared to the 1996 census the population of Kyrenia had increased by 60%, Nicosia by 37%, Famagusta by 21%, Iskele by 14% and Guzelyurt by
13%.
The Prime Minister stated that in 10 years the de-facto population had increased by more than 32% and the de-jure population had increased by 36%. He said that while the de-facto population consisted of 143,843 males and 121,257 females the de-jure population consisted of 138,568 males and 118,076 females.
Research methods
Soyer said that the answers to the 61 questions on the Census questionnaire provided the data from which the results were obtained therefore audits of the question sheets were the main concern. When the data-processing, which was required to cross check the data, was being recorded one by one, any errors that were found were corrected then and there.
The data that was gathered through the questionnaires was mechanically edited and consistency analysis was carried out, the data was grouped and a population distribution, based primarily on place of residence was made. Therefore both the de-facto and de-jure population was determined by residence, gender and by nationality.
The de-facto population reflects the number of people that were in the country on the day of the census and the place where they were recorded on that day. The de-jure population reflects the permanent residence of the subjects. The definition of permanent residence by international offices is the place that a person resides in for at least a year or longer, the place where the most time is spent.
Subjects that were in Norther: Cyprus on the day of the censu but that do not permanentl reside in Northern Cyprus an subjects that were out of th country on the day of the censu but were recorded by official were all processed in the data base while, reaching the figure that were released as the de facto and de-jure populations.
