South Cyprus uncomfortable with EU inspections in North Cyprus
The Greek Cypriot government has reacted to the EU in regards to the inspection by the European Commission of establishments in the North. The Greek Cypriot government found the EU's explanation to be unsatisfactory and expressed its disappointment throughout the week. The European Commission said that this was a move to familiarise the Turkish Cypriots with the 'acquis communautaire'. Greek Cypriot Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis said on Monday that two European Commission delegations would be travelling to the North over the next few days in order to inspect the sea ports' and airports' technical infrastructure. "Our Permanent Representation in Brussels has already made very strong representation to the EU. The reply was that the purpose of the visit was exclusively to familiarise the Turkish Cypriots with the 'acquis communautaire' regarding the issue of port and airport safety," Pashiardis said. He added, "For us this reply is not satisfactory and our objections to the EU will continue."
