Excursions From Nicosia City Cyprus To Morphou Soli Vouni Monasteries Churces

Route Take the road leading west from Nicosia (Route C on Nicosia routes map) ignoring a right fork leading to Kyrenia by the long way round the mountains. Our road to Soli (35 mile) and Vouni (37 mile) diverges from the highway to Troodos just before Astromeritis at a signpost marked Morphou.

On the way back to Nicosia a detour can be made to Asinou Church by taking the Lefka road immediately after passing Karavostasi and continuing left for Kalokhorio and Angolemi. Cross the Troodos road at Kato Koutraphas for Pano Koutraphas and for Nikitari, where the village priest should be contacted. He will accompany visitors to Asinou Church (25 mile from Pendayia). Should the overnight destination be one of the mountain resorts, fork right as above in Karavostasi, but then fork right again, skirting Lefka and turning right again on the road leading due south via Xerarkaka crossroads to Kalopanayiotis, Pedhoulas, Prodhromos and Troodos (29 mile from Karavostasi).

Opening hours Soli: summer 9 a.m. to 12 noon, 3 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. and winter 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.. 2 p.m. to 4.30 p.m.
Vouni: same opening hours as for Soli.

The road westwards from Nicosia runs through a fertile plain of unfenced land, green with crops in spring and early summer, baked brown and expectant of rain in the autumn. The two great mountain ranges on either side are at all stages close enough to be seen in detail: the toothed crags of the Kyrenia range to the north, and the Troodos mountains, humped and massive to the south, with the white dome of the Early Warning scanner usually clearly visible on the summit of Mt Olympus.
