Cemetery Sites of North Cyprus, Cyprus usefull information
Two main areas of known tombs on the north side of the North Cyprus Kyrenia range are at Vounous near Bellapais, and Lapithos. The Vounous cemetery sprawls down the flank of the mountain, close to where later the abbey of Bellapais was to rise. Much of it has been excavated and studied carefully, but sadly there has also been much tomb robbing over the years. It was thought wiser, therefore, not to try to locate the settlement and risk further, damage.
Lapithos (Turkish, Lapta) lies a few miles west of Kyrenia in the foothills. The Swedish Cyprus Expedition had their headquarters there for several years and dug many sites including the Early Bronze Age cemetery, known as Vrysi tou Barba (the spring of the old man), below the village near the sea. Again, a settlement was not found, probably for one of two reasons; either weather and agriculture have eroded it away down the hillside, or else ancient Lapithos lies under the modern village, which would make sense as the locality is fed by a perpetual spring. To the south of the Kyrenia range in the Ovgos valley, lies Philia (Turkish, Serhadkoy) and here were found many other large groups of burials, hence there must have been early villages there too.
