ELECTRIC TIME WEIGHTS AND MEASURES
ELECTRIC TIME WEIGHTS AND MEASURES
MEASURES OF LENGTH
British units of length are used, with the addition of the 'pic' (arshin in Turkish), which equals two feet. The Cyprus mile, of approximately three statute miles or one league (or a stage travelled by a laden donkey!), is unofficial and used solely by the peasants.
LAND MEASURE
1 evlek. = 400 sq. yds. 1 donum (or scala) = 1,600 sq. yds. or approx. 1/3 acre.
MEASURES OF WEIGHT
Though English weights are recognized, the Cyprus standards are in more general use, except for postage.
1 dram = 0-112 oz.
100 drams (J oke) = 1 onje or onka
400 drams = 1 oke (2-8264 Ib.)
44 okes = 1 Cyprus kantar
180 okes = 1 Aleppo Kantar (for carobs)
200 okes = 1 kantar (for fuel and onions)
MEASURES OF CAPACITY
English pints, quarts and gallons are usual, though the oke or okkd (1-125 quarts) may be encountered in country districts. The Cyprus litre, used for oil, is 2-8 quarts. The old kou^a (jar) of 2-25 gallons and the gomari or donkey-load (36 gallons) are rarely used.
ELECTRICITY
240 volts A.C., 50 cycles, single phase for lighting and domestic requirements. The larger hotels provide points for electric shavers,
giving alternative voltages of 230/115.
TIME
Two hours in advance of Greenwich Mean Time, or seven hours in advance of Eastern Standard Time (U.S.A.).
