Kyrenia Jazz Festival in North Cyprus

Second Kyrenia North Cyprus Jazz Festival. A founder member of the world famous Mahavishnu Orchestra Cobham has performed with such stars as John McLaughlin, George Benson, Miles Davies, Oscar Peterson, Count Basie, The Grateful Dead and Peter Gabriel. He has toured and continues to tour frequently all over the world giving concerts and conducting workshops and master classes.

Compared with Billy, Polish-Cuban jazz vocalist Yvonne Sanchez is a relatively new comer to the jazz scene. Her interest in musicDstarteduwhen she was a percussionist in Poland. However, she gave up music when she went to Germany. In 1994 she moved to Prague where she met saxophonist Mike Tramonte and guitarist Max Voegler who helped her discover what she describes as "her hidden voice".After playing with the best musicians on the Prague jazz scene she gave her first concert in the famous Reduta Jazz Club in 1995 and in 1998 was awarded the title of the "Vocalist of the Year" by the Czech Jazz Society. Sanchez has performed in many different countries where the difference in cultures has become a catalyst for her development. Her 2001 debut album Invitation" was recorded with the Robert Balzar Trio and was nominated for a Czech Grammy.

At the festival she performed Cubano-Latino-Brazilian style music. Special guest at the festival was Tony Jones who is no stranger to the TRNC, having performed at the First Jazz Festival previous year and then stayed on to perform regularly at the Rocks' Habenera Bar. Turkish Cypriot husband and wife, Ersen and Zelis Sururi along with Soner Ersen and Fuat Kutrafalu complete the line up for what was again a wonderful musical experience.
