Metalwork in North Cyprus
Metalwork in North Cyprus, usefull information of Northern Cyprus
Another commodity which was buried with the dead was metal. A man would be given a dagger, knife or chisel; there was quite a range of standard shapes to chose from. For his toilet there was a razor or tweezers, while the clothes of both sexes were fastened with pins. It is hard to say just how pins were worn, because they are seldom found resting on the body, a new burial in the tomb would displace and disturb its earlier neighbour. However the pins seem to come in pairs, so they were probably used on the shoulder or at the waist.
For a long time it was believed that the knowledge and skill of metal working was brought to the island by technically more advanced invaders from overseas. The invasion theory, which dominated archaeological thinking everywhere in the early half of this century, is on its way out. As is so often the case, the Cypriot culture of the Early Bronze Age is a blend of original local ideas together with some imported ones. Interest in local metallurgy did not gain ground until it was realised that there were native Cypriots working the local copper during the Bronze Age. This happened with the seminal investigation carried out by du Plat Taylor at Apliki (Turkish, Aplic). One of her colleagues, Catling, made a survey of all the Cypriot metal work of the Bronze Age. It is the pioneer study of this field and a standard work.
