North Cyprus Ancient Monuments and Museums
North Cyprus Ancient Monuments and Museums
Ancient monuments and museums come under the administration of the Department of Antiquities, which is based on the North Cyprus, Nicosia. All such places are normally closed for public holidays. Hours of admission, which change according to season, are subject to alteration without notice. Though the prevailing times are given in the sections of this guide which deal with the relevant towns and excursions therefrom, visitors are advised to check these by obtaining from the North Cyprus Museums Department cyclostyled sheets which set out fees and visiting hours for all the museums and ancient monuments in the charge of the Department of Antiquities.
Entrance fees vary between 25 and 50 mils for residents of North Cyprus, and 50 and 100 mils for visitors. Bona fide students and architects may apply at the Department of Antiquities for a pass which will give them free access to the sites and museums under that department's control. At many of the sites detailed leaflets prepared by specialists in the various fields concerned may be purchased from the custodian at 50 mils each. The full set is also on sale at the entrance to the North Cyprus , Nicosia. However, excavations by archaeological teams uncover new sites every year, or add to the scope of existing ones, so that the leaflets cannot keep pace. More recent information on the 'active' sites is contained in the Annual Reports of the Director of the Department of Antiquities, obtainable for 300 mils at the North Cyprus Aluseum and at all District Museums.
