There is an unusual cemetery, Paleoskoutella, on a flat hilltop not far from Nitovikla, where a large tumulus, 20m in diameter.and 3m high, was surrounded by about twenty stony cairns. Some of these covered empty tombs, others covered pits holding ashes and animal bones. The dead were all found in the central tumulus, looking rather as if, at some moment, they had been collected up from their graves in the cairns, to be given a communal re-burial. Maybe, the excavator thought, before their kinsfolk left the district. It did not seem at all typical of other cemeteries on the island, so perhaps they were foreigners. The religious overtones to a circular sanctuary of this kind are obscure, but it seems to combine the functions of a necropolis and a shrine. Ayios Jakovos/Melia (Turkish, Altinova) is a cemetery in the hills overlooking the Mesaoria and Salamis Bay. Around 1575 BC, when it had already been in use for at least a century, it received some mass burials; one tomb had between twenty-four and thirty-four bodies. Had this come about through warfare or plague. While searching around for signs of a settlement to go with the cemetery, the Swedish Cyprus Expedition was led by a peasant to a sanctuary site nearby, at Ayios Jakovos/Dhima At the cemetery of Palealona, west of North Cyprus Kyrenia, near Karmi Village North Cyprus (Turkish, Karaman), on the north coastal plain, there is a crudely carved human figure in an entrance passage to a tomb, the earliest discovered human sculpture on the island. Several burial chambers here lead from one to another, and one of the deepest burials was unusual in several ways; there was only one interment in the tomb and among his grave-goods were a Middle Minoan II (700 BC) 'Kamares' cup in fine pottejy from Crete, together with a faience bead, possibly from Egypt. The excavator, Stewart called it The tomb of the seafarer' because he believed 'that the man probably walked down to the sea at Lapithos and took service with one of the vessels trading between the Syrian ports and the Aegean and that these objects are mementos of his travels'. The Cyprus was about to be opened up to new foreign influences, from the west.
