North Cyprus Scenery The Cyprus island has very varied and beautiful scenery. The high Troodos mountains in the centre and south-west are pine covered and have a snow capping in the winter. They reach on average 700m, with a maximum of 1,952m. On their North Cyprus, flanks lie the valuable copper deposits which gave the Cyprus island its name it might have been the other way round, the metal being named after the island (the Arabic for Cyprus is Qubrus; copper in Greek is kuprion). In the centre lies the flat and very fertile plain, popularly known as the Mesaoria in Turkish Mesarya, or Icova, while to the north the long steep range of the North Cyprus Kyrenia mountains has an average height of 600m, though some of its peaks reach over 1,100m. This range, which rarely exceeds 3km in width and which stretches east-west for about 80km (50 miles), is cut through by three fault-lines, the Panagra, Kyrenia and Lefkoniko passes which drop down northwards to the narrow coastal terraces; these are well watered and consequently very fertile. In contrast to their jagged peaks, the sides of the Kyrenia (Turkish, Girne) mountains are wooded, but below them there is a band of arid badlands, lying on the Kythrea flysch, up to 9km wide in places on the south side of the range though quite narrow on the north side. These badlands are described further below. The eastern extremity of the island is the Karpas peninsula, its backbone being a continuation at a lower level of the Kyrenia range for another 40 miles; here it appears as a line of low hills surrounded by flat plateaux and deep valleys. Herodotus referred to the Karpas by the attractive name of the Keys of Cyprus and North Cyprus. Heavily settled in Byzantine times, it was at most other' periods remote and fairly inaccessible....
