The Cyprus Turkish Building Contractors Association
The Cyprus Turkish Building Contractors Association is the corporation that ensures that the contractors are registered and their work is audited. It is illegal for a company to start construction unless it is a registered member of the Association in Northern Cyprus and the penalty that the law requires is imprisonment. As the Association is under the protection of the TRNC laws all contractors have to abide by their regulations.
The Head Office of the Cyprus Turkish Building Contractors Association, which was founded in 1994, is in Lefkosa. The main aim of the Association is to maintain cooperation between builders and employers in the construction sector, protecting their common economic, social and cultural benefits, represent them and maintain harmonious and efficient work mediums for Association members and participate in development efforts in the sector,

The quality of construction work in Northern Cyprus is being controlled by the Association; foreign home buyers can consult the Association in the case of a problem during their purchase agreements with the builders. The Cyprus Turkish Building Contractors Association has the power to force the contractor to abide by the regulations, in order for the construction companies to continue operating they have to be run by experts with the experience and knowledge required by the law. Construction companies have to employ at least one architect or a civil engineer as a director. Companies not abiding by this rule cannot be issued with membership to the Association and consequently cannot work as builders.
The machinery, investments and technical experts of all the building companies are constantly being reviewed and certified by the Cyprus Turkish Building Contractors Association,
Some of the duties of the Association could be listed as follows: to protect the rights of the profession: to become a member of national and international Associations accepted by the related law; to send representatives to sectoral meetings; to attend workshops; to increase the professional knowledge of the members; to train qualified workers, technicians, expert executives; to increase national and company efficiency; to provide scholarship for employees of members for national and international trainings to improve work-security; to undertake public relation work; to publish sector related bulletins, newspapers, magazines, books and other printed publications; to ensure that members abide by sector related law and professional ethics; to make obligatory professional decisions in order to protect the professional good-will and respectability; while yet another duty of the Association is to keep records of the work and work related forces as well as the registration codes and the statistics of the member builders.
In order for applicants to qualify and be accepted for membership they need to be TRNC citizens, who have lived in the TRNC for at least one year, and work in any one of the registered builders and/or building companies that have the following qualifications and can apply through the companies for the registration and their membership will be approved by the Board of Executives of the Association.
(A) Individuals registered at the Chamber of Civil Engineers and/or Chamber of Architects according to the laws of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
(B) Individuals who have diplomas in any of the following areas: construction technician or equivalent and worked with a builder, architect, constructor or civil engineer for at least two years and gained experience in construction.
(C) Vocational Technical School, Pragmatic Vocational Technical School or equivalent diploma and worked with a builder, architect, constructor, or civil engineer for at least five years in construction and gained experience.
(D) Graduate of a regular High School or an equivalent School and worked with a builder, architect, constructor, or civil engineer for at least seven years in construction and gained experience.
(E) Primary School Graduate and worked as a foreman in constructions for at least 10 years.
In short, the Cyprus Turkish Building Contractors Association defines the Construction Sector's vision and auditing standards in Northern Cyprus and is under the protection of the related laws. We advise foreign home-buyers in Northern Cyprus never to do business with companies that are not registered with the Cyprus Turkish Building Contractors Association, if the Company is not a Member of the Association this means that they are not building according to the standards of the country and are definitely not audited for regulations.
