The knowledge which we have to-day of this period in Cyprus is constructed from very uneven evidence because it comes almost entirely from tombs. That is the result of early uncontrolled exploration, from the last century into the beginning of this one, when the investigators were merely concerned with collecting art treasures which had been buried with the dead and certainly they found plenty of them. As a result it is difficult now to reconstruct Early Bronze Age daily life because of the gaps in our knowledge. In contrast to the more recently explored Neolithic period, the villages and shrines of the Bronze Age are virtually unknown. Then again, we do not know whether Bronze Age people made special furnishings for their funerals, which might have had little in common with what they used in their homes. In which case it would be all too easy for the finds from tombs to give a misleading impression. The very size of some of the cemeteries implies that there must have been a large population on the island, but there is a second unevenness in the evidence as we have it. Until recent years investigation had been very heavily biased towards the north of the island; to the coastal plain and to the Ovgos valley south of the Kyrenia range. You could have imagined that nobody lived in the rest of the island, but this is not the case. A realistic picture of life in the Early Bronze Age is still a long way off.
