NORTH CYPRUS HERBARIUM IN ALEVKAYA FOREST

The North Cyprus herbarium located in the ALEVKAYA mountain where is between Esentepe and Degirmenlik. You can go there either by a mountain road or by a lower tarmac road or by coastal road Tatlisu-Girne in North Cyprus. To get North Cyprus Herbarium, follow via the mountain road coming from Girne (North Cyprus), and on top of the Besparmak mountain hill turn to left to ALEVKAYA road. The other route can also reach the North Cyprus Herbarium via the northern coastal road by turning south either at Karaagac or Esentepe in North Cyprus.

Probably the group of wild flowers that fascinates most spring visitors to our country are the orchids-about thirty different kinds. These have always been rather a problem for a herbarium, because they go black and unrecognizable when dried. So we have provided three ways out for the visitor who wants to identify "this lovely orchid". One is the complete series of colour photographs of all Cyprus Orchids maid by the German specialists A. and K. Hansen and given to the North Cyprus Herbarium as a birthday present. Another aid to identification is our famous "spirit collection" - orchid flowers preserved in an alcoholic mixture developed by the great British herbarium at Kew. In this they lose their colours but preserve their shape, an equally important clue. And a third aid is the 4-page "simplified key" to all the local orchids. This helps you to run down the right name for your specimen by answering a series of questions about it, and gives a lot of surprising information about the Orchid Family too.

North Cyprus has more to offer than its sun and sea, natural beauties and historic sites. One surprising attraction is the North Cyprus herbarium, which charms lovers of our wild flowers as well as providing a research center for botanists. Most people can confidently name the more showy blooms in the countryside; shepherds and foresters know dozens more. But how many of those seventeen North Cyprus "endemics", found nowhere else in the world, would you recognize? It was to fill this need that the collection of pressed and labelled plants originally made by the resident English botanist Deryck Viney in the course of writing his Illustrated Flora of the country was adopted by The Forestry Department and formally opened to the public, on 9.11.1989. Since then it has expanded to include examples of nearly all the 1250 native plants species.
