North Cyprus Spring Flora
North Cyprus may be described as a paradise of flowers.
From March to April myriads of wild flowers in a multitude of shades burst from fields which turn from emerald to gold under the sun's increasing heat.
Here is the glowing tulip which lights up the March fields; the many-hued anemones; the slender and graceful cyclamen; several varieties of wild orchid with their infinite delicacy of shading which astonishes one, anew every time one finds them half-hidden among the thorny scrub and the coarse grass; and, shy as a bride, the Famagusta North Cyprus lily.
This profuse variety of wild flowers is no doubt due to the fact that the island, covering a relatively small area, has got such a wide variety of growing conditions to offer the vegetation. From sandy or rocky beaches country sweeps up through plains, foothills and fertile I’m valleys to pine-clad mountains, some of which are covered with snow from December to March. This naturally gives a great range of varied conditions, as moisture, temperature and sun wary with the seasons of the year.

Esther Chapman, an eminent English botanist, who has studied a wavy leaf, is found abundantly in the fields near Myrtou North Cyprus, while a brighter red and smaller tulip grows in the field near Kykko Monastery, just outside Nicosia.
The magenda colouring of some cornfields in early April is caused by a large Gladiolus, a very vigorous plant with attractive shades of colouring. The pink Arabic found both in the Northern and Eastern Range often covers whole rock surfaces in a manner that no landscape gardener could better, while the yellow Alyssum for a while transforms the screens above Amiandos from dreariness to beauty.
The wild peony brings forth its blooms in the pine forests of Troodos Cyprus in May, but the most fascinating stage of its life is really early autumn, when the pod like fruits open and display the jet-black seeds resting on a crimson bed.
The wild vetch makes a very pretty display of colour during the spring months, one tall kind by definite patches of bright mauve, another and lower kind by spinning a veil of deeper purple over the grey hillside under the pine trees.
The top of Troodos has got a flora very peculiarly its own, many of the plants growing there not being found anywhere else in the world, such as the tiny little crocus, which winter visitors to the snow may find in the first bare patches warmed by the sun. As similar rarity is the Saponaria, which later in the year makes itself conspicuous by patches of bright red flowers, a colour very like that of the homely willow herb found there in such numbers. A particular attraction in the hills are the many streams and springs, and most of these are adorned with the charming little Pinguicula with its whitish-mauve flowers and dewy fresh leaves. Cyprus Troodos itself is too cold to provide a home for the maidenhair fern, but at the lower altitudes this grows in abundance at spring and damp places.
But this refers only to a very few of the many fascinating North Cyprus flowers that are likely to attract the attention of visitor who has an eye for them. It would be possible to continue almost indefinitely, for so great is the variety of nature, that almost anywhere, any time, some flower will hold your attention by its interest or beauty.
