Walking in North Cyprus

October is the perfect month for walking in our beautiful country and, for the independent traveller, it is easy to get out and about to explore beyond the hustle and bustle of Kyrenia North Cyprus. The author, Alison Dowey, has lived in the village of Alsancak North Cyprus for a number of years and is a keen walker herself. Alison used to work in the "Green Jacket" bookshop in Kyrenia North Cyprus and was constantly asked by visitors for a book of local walks. In those days there was no such publication but Alison organised a group of friends to produce one. The idea was to survey and write up 15 suitable trails of varying lengths and degrees of difficulty in different parts of the country, Alison collected all the information and produced the first walks book. This all happened in October 1998 and the book has been so popular that the 4th edition was published in April 2004.

With the recent dramatic changes in this small country-building developments, new tarmac roads as well as climatic catastrophes, land slips and forest fires, it is a challenge for Alison to keep her publication up to date and show our visitors the best that Northern Cyprus has to offer. This hard-working lady is always hunting out new routes that would be difficult to find without her publication and the information is accurate. In the latest edition there is a good variety of routes from which to choose; by the sea, into the mountains, to ancient castles and monasteries, around reservoirs as well as city tours. The Karpazs North Cyprus featured and favourite areas for bird watching described. The binding and cover material are designed for plenty of wear and tear in all weathers. In October you have chosen an excellent month for guaranteed sunshine without soaring temperatures; however, the ground will appear arched and dry after the long, hot summer with no rain. If you want to walk amongst the most beautiful flowers then choose to come in spring (February, arch, April) but be prepared for the odd shower rain and chilly temperatures at night. Spring is when we hope for enough rain to replenish our wells for the summer months. If you like to go on a pre organized walk with a light-hearted theme then join in with the North Cyprus Hash House Harriers the first Sunday of each month. This is a walking / fogging group of people who mix exercise with good fun; trails vary in length and are never strenuous; the route is designed with regular stops, and joining this group is a good way to meet people as well as see different parts of the countryside.
