Registration of Residents in North Cyprus
Inhabitants, on attaining the age of 12, are liable to registration. Therefore such people must appear before the registration department for the purpose of registering under the provisions of this law. Every such person must deliver to the registration authority two passport-size photographs of himself, a birth certificate and other particulars, and his finger-print will be recorded in the prescribed manner on the application form. An identity card will be issued after payment of the appropriate fees. In the same manner a person who enters the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus must also appear before the Registration Authority within six days of his arrival for the purpose of registering himself under the provisions of the law, and get an identity card.
Members of the Diplomatic Services and Consular Services of a Foreign Government, who are duly accredited to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, are exempted. Every person to whom an identity card is issued is responsible for its safe custody. When an identity card is lost, destroyed, or defaced so that the particulars thereon are no longer readable the person concerned must notify the Registration Department and apply to them for a replacement identity card.
Migration Department
The Migration Department of the Ministry of Interior and Housing is responsible for issuing passports to the citizens of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and is also the Department responsible for migration affairs.
Passports
For travel, citizens of the TRNC (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus) must obtain passports issued by this Department. Passports may also be obtained from the Consulates of the TRNC in Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the USA.
Passports are prepared in the Government's Printing Office and have 32 pages. Passport validity is for ten years. Children above twelve years of age are required to get separate passports.
Immigration
All departures from, and arrivals to, the TRNC are made through official ports as announced by the Government. Immigration control at the ports is carried out by immigration officers appointed by the Department.
No entry visa for aliens is required prior to travel to the TRNC. All necessary visas are given at the arrival port.
At present all entry visas are given in the visitor category. Applications may be made for other categories (e.g. employment, business, and student). These are all of temporary character. For permanent permission, the procedure to be followed is prescribed in Chapter 105 of the Laws of the TRNC. Citizenship is also granted by this Department. For citizenship, residence for at least five years is required.
