The Bar Association of Northern Cyprus
The Turkish Cypriot Bar Association includes all the practising advocates in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The central council of the Bar Association is known as the Bar Council. There are also Local Bar Committees in each of the districts, elected at ordinary general meetings of Local Bars.
The Bar Council of Northern Cyprus consists of the Attorney-General and the Deputy Attorney-General as ex officio members who are the President and Vice-President respectively, two practising advocates elected to represent each Local Bar, and three members elected by ordinary general meeting of the Bar Association. The elected members hold office for a period of three years. The elections take place every three years.
The Bar Council has the power to consider all matters affecting the profession and take such action thereon as it may deem fit. The Council I has the duty to maintain the independence of the Bar and also the power ' to regulate, inter alia, the practice and etiquette of the profession, to make recommendations as to the desirability of introducing legislation, to represent the body of practising advocates, and to make rules regulating the matters coming within its jurisdiction, subject to such rules being approved by the majority of a general meeting of advocates.
