The original church is associated with the cult of St Thomas a Becket, who was held in especial reverence in Europe during the Middle Ages. It became the Greek Orthodox Cathedral during the Venetian occupation, and declined into use as a grain store and market (hence its present name) during the period of Turkish rule. Though now ruined, the remains of the church are of interest because of their combination of Byzantine, Gothic and Venetian styles of architecture. The part which is the most imposing and attractive is the great north facade adjoining St Sophia. This contains three doorways, the centre one being an obvious copy in stone of the marble archway of its neighbour. The five orders of this entrance are surmounted by a gable with a circular central opening of tracery, and niches for sculpture on either side.
