Church of St John
Church of St John - Mosques - History and Travel Guide of Cyprus
The church of the Orthodox archbishopric adjoining the modern archiepiscopal palace, is built on the site of the Benedictine Abbey of St John of Bibi, which was deserted when the order left the island in 1426. The early church's most sacred relic, the finger of St John the Baptist, was presumably removed at this time. At an early period of Greek Orthodox use, the dedication was changed from St John the Baptist to St John the Divine. The wall paintings generally date from 1730, though those used in the decoration of the west end are later in fact, the latest in the churches of Cyprus . The Day of Judgment above the south door is especially graphic and terrifying; the Creation on the north side is the most charming, and the Discovery of the Tomb of St Barnabas (to the right of the archiepiscopal throne) is considered to be of the greatest historical interest.
